2024-2025 season. Yet, despite their consistent success, their victories often fail to make headlines in the school paper or announcements over the loudspeakers.

Cheerleading, especially at a competitive level, is far more than a side attraction at football games. These athletes endure grueling hours of practice, pushing their bodies to the limits. Between balancing schoolwork and early morning practices, their dedication is unmatched. Tumbling routines, intricate stunts, and synchronized chants are a part of their daily regimen, but what goes unseen are the bruises, sprains, and endless conditioning that come with the sport.

“People just see us during halftime or on the sidelines,” says Alexis Rigley, Kearny's senior competitive captain. “But that’s just a fraction of what we do. Competing on the mat is a whole different level. It’s more intense than most people think.”

For the Komet cheerleaders, their journey is about more than just winning. It’s about gaining the respect and recognition they deserve for being outstanding athletes. The sport is demanding, both mentally and physically, and the team hopes that one day their hard work will be acknowledged on the same level as their peers in traditional sports.

The cheer team’s silent triumphs serve as a reminder that athletic excellence doesn’t always come with the fanfare it deserves. They may be underappreciated now, but the strength and passion that define them will continue to lead them to victory—both on the mat and in changing the narrative surrounding their sport.

As Kearny's cheerleading squad heads into their next season, they hold their heads high. Because even though the trophies line their shelves in near silence, they know what they’re worth. They are champions, whether the school sees it or not.
